Aurora Hunting Tours
Yellowknife is the best place in the world to view Aurora! We are a smaller tour company, so we can offer a more personalized Aurora viewing experience. We take you out in our comfortable 7 passenger SUV and/or our 20 passenger tour bus and "hunt" for the Aurora! When we reach our destination we park and view the Aurora. We will tell you about the science of Aurora, identify the planets (we will use telepscope!), the many stars, look for shooting stars (make a wish!) and maybe even see wildlife!
As an Aboriginal tour company, we will talk about our Aboriginal stories and legends of the Aurora. We will also take photographs of you and the Aurora at no extra charge (up to 5 photos) and we will be happy to offer our assistance to help you set your camera so you can also take wonderful photos of the Aurora. We also have tripods for free so reserve early!
Mother Nature is boss, so on some nights the weather is not good with too much clouds and we cannot see Aurora. So try to book your tour after you look at the weather forecast for those dates. Because of this, some months are better than others for viewing Aurora. We recommend the following months (in order of best viewing chances) to visit Yellowknife:
1st best month - March (warmer weather, clear nights, Ice Castle is open!)
2nd best month - September (no WINTER CLOTHING NEEDED!, great photos!)
3rd best month - January (clear nights, very cold!)
4th best month - August (middle to end of the month, great photos!)
5th best month - February (clear nights, very cold!)
6th best month - April (beginning to middle, warmer temperatures!)
7th best month - December (some clear nights, ice road opens!)
8th best month - October (beginning to end, clear nights)
We recommend DO NOT come in October or November, we start to get all of our snow and this means many days of heavy cloud cover and lots of snowfall, plus many tour companies close during this time. Our Amazing Arctic Aurora Packages starts August 12, ends October 20, then we close and start our Packages again from December 02 to April 28.
If you are looking for a more personal Aurora tour experience with a local Aboriginal tour company, this tour is for you! We offer yummy local traditional snacks, hot water, hot chocolate and/or hot apple drinks. We also have comfortable folding chairs for you to sit on but some guests like to lay down on the frozen ice and look up to enjoy the stars and Aurora!
