Ice Roads
The ice roads of northern Canada, although made famous only recently with reality television our ice roads have been around for decades. They provide a vital link for many isolated communities. Ice road season usually starts around mid December and closes (melts) around mid April. The residents in those isolated communities take full advantage of the ice roads and haul in larger household items that otherwise would be too expensive to fly in.
The longest ice road in the world is here in the Northwwest Territories, it is the Contwoyto Winter Ice Road and its run 675kms from Yellowknife! Ice roads to the De Beers, BHP and Rio Tinto diamond mines are about 400kms. The truckers can only travel at 20kms per hour when fullly loaded.
We have travelled the many winter and ice roads over the years and have many close call experiences to talk about. Ice Road travel can be very dangerous, you need to be prepared at all times in case you find yourself in a situation. Our guides have years of winter and ice road driving experience.
We offer 2 Ice Road tours. The Dettah Ice Road Tour is a short one hour tour, as the ice road is in Yellowknife. Our other Ice road tour is the 3 hour Diamond Ice Road Tour, and this tour takes you to the very same ice road used by the diamond mine truckers and the same one recently made famous by the television show "Ice Road Truckers".
If you're looking for a truly unique and exciting adventure, try our Ice Road tours, listen to the ice crack! As you can expect these tours are very popular.
