Northern Food
Like everywhere all across this great planet of ours, Canada’s north has some delicious northern foods! As a Dene, of course am I partial to traditional foods, not only are they downright delicious but are very healthy as well.
Here are some of the foods we eat; moose, caribou, beaver, muskrat, duck, goose, rabbit, ptarmigan, muskox, trout, whitefish, arctic grayling, pickerel, various berries and bannock. Further up north, the Inuvialiut and Inuit peoples enjoy beluga whale, seal, arctic char, muttuk, berries and eskimo ice cream
As part of our “Cultural Experiences” we offer the “Traditional Meal Experience”. For this, we cook a traditional meal for you. Not only will you be treated to a delicious northern dish, but you will learn about how we would get these foods and how they were prepared.
Now of course there are local restaurants that also offer northern dishes and to get the full experience of northern foods, I definitely recommend checking out some of these menu offerings. Here in Yellowknife the following places usually have northern foods on their respective menus: Bullock’s Bistro, Explorer Hotel (Traders Grill), Fuego’s and Le Frolic
My recommendations:
1. Pan fried Pickerel at Bullock’s Bistro (they also have the best buns!)
2. Arctic Char at the Explorer Hotel
3. Bison at Fuego’s
4. Muskox at Le Frolic
